Kahondo Coffee Washing Station is one of nine facilities operated by Virunga Coffee Company, established in 2012 to deliver specialty-grade coffees while supporting smallholder farmers through increased market premiums. Situated in the Isale region of North Kivu near Lake Kivu and bordering Uganda, this location benefits from ideal growing conditions—ample rainfall, elevated terrain, and nutrient-rich volcanic soil. Despite economic challenges and limited infrastructure that complicate both production and export logistics, Virunga Coffee Company has invested directly in farmer training and local development projects including transportation networks.
