Finca Oro Verde

Roaster notes

Silverio Nina started growing coffee in 2007. He is a third-generation coffee farmer who grew up helping his father and grandfather grow coffee in Manco Kapac, a nearby village close to Copacabana. Silverio has his own coffee nursery at Finca Oro Verde where he grows Catuaí, Caturra, and Java varietals. At Oro Verde, each coffee tree yields between two and two-and-a-half kilograms of cherry per year. This is managed with a controlled pruning programme which encourages new growth. A third of the Catuaí and Caturra trees are pruned every year using the descriptively named poda esqueleto (skeleton pruning) method. This method leaves the main trunk of the tree with approximately ten centimetres of branch growth around the spine of the tree. Where necessary, Silverio will also use the poda baja (low pruning) method, also known as stumping. The tree is effectively cut down, leaving just less than half a metre of trunk remaining. New growth develops from the trunk. The pruning strategy helps Silverio manage the crop size year to year.
