Originally a tomato farmer, Antônio began by tending the coffee trees already on the farm and growing tomatoes. At first, everything was done manually by the family. As Antonio kept planting coffee, the increase in yield led him to also focus on quality processing. In 2004, they built the first patio to ensure optimal drying conditions. In 2011, their harvest was big enough to enable them to invest more in their coffee farm and they planted even more coffee. In 2013, they began working with COCARIVE and discovered that their coffees had the potential to be superb. The next year, they modified their management strategy to focus on high-quality processing. Now run by Antônio’s two children, Allan and Allex, Sítio Dois Irmãos is producing high-quality Naturals that delight us with their sweet and fruity profile. He is joined by two of his adult children who work with him on the farm. Alirio transitioned to specialty coffee in 2018. The 1,200 growers that deliver cherry to this station live and farm on the hills surrounding Mushonyi. In these hills, the altitude can vary from a low of 1,600 meters above sea level to a high of 1,950 meters above sea level. Farmers, on average, cultivate about 300 coffee trees on their small plots. Many also intercrop bananas, eucalyptus and cassava to generate additional income. Mushonyi was originally built by the army. At the time, the army was anticipating high volumes of cherry, and they built to size. The station has eight fermentation tanks, a standard washing channel and cherry sorting shed for additional sorting before cherry is pulped.
